Enabling SmartAsset Office Add-Ins
In certain circumstances the SmartAsset office add-ins can become disabled. Depending on how these items were disabled the SmartAsset add-in can then become disabled each time the office application starts forcing the user to enable the add-in each time.
This article outlines how to enable the SmartAsset Add-ins in the circumstance they become disabled. In addition to this we review how to correct the add-in when it becomes permanently disabled and clean up any previous versions that may remain within the device registry.
Enable disabled add-in
The following relates to Excel, Outlook and Projects.
- From within the office application click on File > Options
- From the options menu click on Add-ins > Manage > Disabled Items as shown in the following image
- Click Go
- From the disabled items window click the SmartAsset excel add-in and click Enable.
- Click close on the Disabled items window
- Click OK on the Excel options window.
- Restart the Excel
- The SmartAsset excel add-in will now be available within the product
Add-in persists in being disabled on start up.
As mentioned above in some circumstances When starting up Office, the SmartAsset add-in is disabled. If an admin attempts to reinstall the SmartAsset client software, the problem persists the following steps can be completed to fix.
Excel add-in
- Please start by closing Excel and uninstall SmartAsset for Excel client from the machine. You can go to the "Programs and Features" control panel to view a list of installed programs. Uninstall SmartAsset office add-in for Excel from here.
- Open the Windows Registry Editor. There are a few ways to find it, but the easiest is to search for "regedit" in your Windows Menu like this:
- Next, you'll navigate to the following folder inside the Registry Editor.
Path:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\Excel\Addins\SmartAsset Software.SmartAsset.ExcelAddin
Key: LoadBehavior
NOTE: Above steps can be deployed via the following command:
reg delete "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\Excel\Addins\SmartAsset Software.SmartAsset.ExcelAddin" /v LoadBehavior
- Next, please reinstall the SmartAsset Excel add-in. You should now be able to run the add-in with no more issues.
Outlook add-in
- Please start by closing Outlook and uninstall SmartAsset for Outlook client from the machine. You can go to the "Programs and Features" control panel to view a list of installed programs. Uninstall SmartAsset office add-in for Outlook from here.

NOTE: Above steps can be deployed via the following command:

We now need to Delete any REG_BINARY keys inside DisabledItems and CrashingAddinList for Outlook.
Note: if the user's machine had older versions of Office installed prior – you may need to check ALL registry version folders and perform step 4 on prior Outlook versions as well. For example, user may be using Outlook 2016, but you may need to perform Step 4 on Outlook 2013 keys (in 15.0 folder).
- Next, navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\Outlook\Addins\OutAboutOutlook.Addin. You will delete any keys in here as well.
Note: In this example, we have version 16 installed. Your version will change based on what Office Suite is installed. Here's a table of common Office years, and their corresponding version number.

- Delete any REG_BINARY keys inside DisabledItems and CrashingAddinList
- Next, please reinstall the SmartAsset Outlook add-in. You should now be able to run the add-in with no more issues.
